The trade-in tax saving most people miss
This is the part that surprises buyers. In Quebec, when you trade a vehicle in against a purchase at a dealer, the sales tax is calculated on the price after your trade-in value is deducted, not on the full sticker price.
Combined GST and QST come to roughly 15%, so on a $6,000 trade-in that mechanism is worth something in the neighbourhood of $900 that a private sale simply does not give you. A private buyer might offer a bit more on paper and still leave you behind once the tax difference is counted. Do that arithmetic before you list it online.

- Service records, even partial ones
- Both sets of keys
- Winter tires, especially mounted on their own rims
- A clean interior; presentation genuinely affects the number
- Honesty about known faults, which costs you less than a surprise found on the hoist
